There’s a common misconception among Software as a Service (SaaS) users that backup isn’t necessary for data because it exists in the cloud. This is untrue. SaaS applications, like Microsoft Office 365, Google G Suite, and Salesforce are just as vulnerable to data loss as on-premise apps. Why? Because the #1 cause of data loss is human error. For as long as I can recall, the 3-2-1 backup rule has been an easy yet effective strategy to prevent data loss. This remains as true today of the cloud as when I worked from floppy disks back in the day.
3-2-1 Backup Rule
- Create 3 copies of your data (1 primary copy and 2 backups)
- Store your copies in at least 2 types of storage media (local drive, network share/NAS, tape drive, etc.)
- Store one of these copies offsite (in the Cloud)
Understand Your Risks
Most cloud services operate under a concept of shared responsibility. But in most cases, liability limits are in place and you are ultimately responsible for your data protection.
- What does your service agreement say about responsibilities and guarantees?
- What are your own policies on data backup and recovery – does your cloud provider meet or exceed these?
- How does your cloud provider backup its data? How often and how far back can they go with restoring data?
- Can they perform granular restores of data, or is it all or nothing?
- Do they follow the 3-2-1 backup rule?
